The Truth About Permanent Jewelry

The Truth About Permanent Jewelry

True permanent jewelry is welded — and that distinction matters. The weld is what makes it symbolic, ceremonial, and lasting. A piece without a weld is simply "seamless," meaning it has no clasp. It's not the same thing.

The appointment is simpler than you'd expect. There's no pain, and no long commitment of your time. The process is quick, the "zap" is barely perceptible, and most appointments are done in under thirty minutes (depending on how many people you have and how long it takes to shop).

The metal matters more than you think. Sterling silver and solid gold are "noble metals," meaning they naturally resist corrosion and outlast plated alternatives. Gold-filled is not a noble metal, but it's the next best thing — a brass core bonded with a substantial layer of real gold that holds up beautifully over time. Silver can tarnish with exposure to harsh chemicals, but it cleans and polishes up nicely. What you probably want to avoid is stainless steel — especially PVD or ION-plated stainless, which carries a yellow-orange tone that some companies market as "18K gold plated". There's no reliable way to verify that claim. More importantly, stainless steel is extremely difficult to break, which means if your piece catches on something, you absorb the force — not the chain.

The weld isn't the weak point — it's actually the strongest. A properly welded jump ring is typically the most secure link in the chain, so it gives a false sense of security to assume that the welded ring will break easily if challenged.. The chain itself is usually what gives first, which is exactly how it should work. A lot of studios don’t clarify the difference between stainless and silver/gold/gold-filled chains —which is pretty important. Noble metals will wear and soften, stainless will not. The plating will wear off of PVD/ION Plated and eventually you will have a very strong, sorta funky looking piece clinging to your appendage.

Fit is set at the appointment — and it matters. Permanent jewelry is sized on you, in the moment. There's no clasp to adjust later, so the fit you leave with is the fit you'll wear. Worth knowing: some chains will stretch over time with regular wear, which means an occasional resize may be needed. A good studio takes time with sizing and is there for you when that happens.

Permanent doesn't mean worry-free — but it doesn't have to mean stressful, either. Your piece should break if it needs to, but there are no guarantees. Know the risk, protect yourself with coban tape during high-risk activities, or simply remove it when needed. If your daily life looks like errands and everyday tasks, you're likely fine.

Thicker isn't better. A heavier chain is less likely to break if it needs to. For most people, a lightweight chain is actually the smarter, more wearable choice.

It layers beautifully — and it's meant to. Permanent jewelry doesn't have to stand alone. It plays well with your existing pieces and stacks intentionally with other permanent ones. Many people come in for one and leave planning their next.

It makes a meaningful gift. Couples, best friends, mothers and daughters — permanent jewelry has become one of the most intentional gifts you can give someone. There's something different about choosing a piece you'll both wear without ever taking off.

Pop-ups are fun. They're not always the best choice. At a pop-up, you often don't know who you're buying from, what you're buying, or where to turn if something goes wrong. Equipment set up on the fly can make it difficult to create a consistent, quality weld. A permanent piece deserves a permanent home base — a brick-and-mortar studio where you know exactly who did the work, and where you can return for maintenance, repairs, or a reweld whenever you need one.

Permanent jewelry done right means uncompromising quality and a studio that stands behind every weld.
